Changing Masters

Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks (Matthew 12:34). I believe you know that heart there is not referring to the heart pumping blood into your arteries or veins, heart there is referring to the mind. That’s like your consciousness, and that transits into your soul. Okay! So just hold that in mind.

So, sin died on the cross. Uhm…no, not completely ‘physically’. Anyway, let me come from the other angle; we are dead to sin because Jesus became sin for us on the cross and thereafter descended into hell, and afterwards proceeded to the throne of God (I’ll have to publish another blog post on this one here cos that’s not the focus for today).

So, I keep wondering at times how it is that we say we are dead to sin, and it’s not just that we say it, we actually are dead to sin! However, I do not cease to wonder why and how come as believers we still sin.

In the actual sense of it, sin is something that has become impossible for us to do. Like totally impossible. However, we still fall into that pit again even after we’ve been saved and we do believe that we truly have been. Like you see somebody that just got saved go back into the same sin he was just saved from. Going by the simple calculations, that’s not supposed to be so. It’s like going against the norm or going against a set theory for a scientific problem. Anyway, this is not just a theory, it’s LIVE.

So, I believe that should be a thought posing question in the mind of the average believer. I mean, as you grow, these questions have to come up at one point or the other (if you’re actually growing). Now, I believe I have the answer to that question, and well, the solution.

You see, our actions are dictated by our minds. Our body receives instructions from there, our mind (which is basically our consciousness, our soul). Now, the mind is somewhat like a mirror. It is only able to reflects the kind of illumination or information it receives. If it receives a dark illumination, it reflects that and vice-versa. Now, the mind does not just reflect, it also has the capacity to store the kind of illumination or information it receives before reflection. That’s why we can call it our consciousness. Our consciousness is an accumulation of all information or light our mind has been able to receive or let in. Therefore, the mind is like a mirror with a storage capacity. All the information; words and images it has received and reflected are encompassesed in it. That’s why I mentioned in the beginning – “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks“.

Having said that, let me now add that when we become born again, or saved, or as I prefer, new creations, the personality that has become new is our spirit. This points out that the source of information for our mind has been replaced. Now, it’s safe to say that our mind does not have the past-darkened source of information. So here comes the question again? How come we are still as it appears bending to the will of the sin nature. Well, I believe you should have already deduced that the mind is still filled with the kind of illumination and information it has received from the former source that governed it; the sin nature. The mind still houses those things and does still reflect them as much as it has them. This is where the problem is. However, I believe you already know why we can still carry out actions pertaining to the old nature having become new creations. The spirit does not directly interact with our bodies, no, it doesn’t work that way.

Spirit ——– Soul ——– Body

Every instruction and information from the spirit does not reach the body without going through the mind. The mind is more like the middleman. The mind is your center place for decision. It’s what dictates ‘what to do’ to the body. So, the spirit is not able to interact with the body without the mind. That’s the middle ground.

Over to solution, it sounds short and easy, but it’s actually a long haul depending on you and not so easy, but simple. Magic word is; renew your mind. The mind is not recreated or replaced but it can be renewed. The content of the mind can be renewed and replaced.

Romans  12:1-3

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.  12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.  12:3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

See that? The key to presenting your ‘bodies‘ as a living, holy and acceptable sacrifice is the renewal of the ‘mind‘… and as I already said, the mind is not it’s own boss. It doesn’t manufacture what it passes across by itself.

So, we have to renew the mind. That’s to let our mind be governed by the word of the Spirit. To be filled with it. If the mind is not renewed, it keeps bending to the will of the already acquired old nature.

Happy Sunday from this part of the world.

  1. Technically, a soul is what you get when you combine body and spirit into one new whole. Our spirits existed before our physical bodies, and when God made Adam, he took his spirit and put it into his body, “and man became a living soul.” The two are intertwined, and the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. It’s why spiritual suffering can also affect our bodies, and vice versa. And why God promised to give us back our bodies in the final days. Just felt like adding that.

    1. Yeah! I completely agree. The post was getting too long. Didn’t want it any longer 😊. The soul came into existence when the spirit and the body were infused…because they cannot be together without the soul. More like the glue. Thank you for the addition 👍👍👍
